Transatlantic ARC 2008

The ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) is an annual transatlantic rally, starting on 23rd November 2008 in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria and finishing in St Lucia in the Caribbean. The 2,700 nautical mile passage on the North East tradewind route takes between 15 to 17 days.

The ARC is the largest transocean event in the world. With more than 200 boats participating in this event, the rally is characterised by a tremendous camaraderie between all those taking part. The ARC organisers provide entertainment for all with a wide-ranging programme of parties, barbecues and talks, demonstrations and seminars, taking place both before the start and after the finish. The ARC is very well organised by the World Cruising Club.

Northern Child is superbly equipped and professionally maintained. She holds a UK Category 0 MCA charter license and stability rating and all the safety equipment is being constantly replaced or updated. It has a water-maker, a generator, all the latest navigation instruments, satellite communication and e-mail on board. As all Swan yachts, Northern Child is extremely comfortable, very fast and can be very competitive in a regatta/rally.

Her latest achievements have been the following:

ARC 2005:        Winner on corrected time of Class D (18 yachts)

OVERALL WINNER OF THE CRUISING DIVISION (160 yachts)

ARC 2004       Winner on corrected time of Class D

line honours in the cruising Division (out of 150 yachts)

ARC 2003:        Northern Child wins her class

For the past 5 years, Northern Child's objectives have been:

To sail as efficiently as possible all the way from Las Palmas to the Caribbean (no use of the engine)

To steer all the way (no use of the autopilot)

To have a friendly, fun and safe passage.

During long passages, all the crew will work on a system of 2 watches to maximise boat speed at all time. All the crew will share all the onboard tasks. Although no previous experience is required, we highly recommend that all the crew have already assessed whether or not you enjoy sailing! All crew will attend a comprehensive safety brief from the Skipper before the start of the rally.
